Southeast of Niuerhe Town in Genhe City lies an olive-shaped lake known as Niuer Lake, covering an area of about forty hectares. During spring, summer, and autumn, the lake is surrounded by impenetrable virgin forests and swamps, making it only visible from helicopters—as a pure jade embedded in emerald velvet. Lowering the altitude reveals that the area around the lake has been trampled flat by wild animals coming to drink. In winter, when the Greater Khingan Mountains are frozen over for thousands of miles, the lake is completely concealed beneath layers of ice and snow. According to some elderly Ewenki people, there is a hunter’s path that leads to the lake. Legend has it that in the year of liberation, retreating Japanese troops from Mohe discarded several sacks of gold into Niuer Lake. Though some have searched for it since, no trace has ever been found.
