Genghis Khan Watch Hill

Transportation: Genghis Khan Watch Hill is located 20 kilometers southwest of Bayan Ula Town. The 100-square-kilometer tourist area features the most typical meadow steppe. In summer, the landscape is dominated by vast expanses of green grass and swaying wildflowers, recreating the magnificent scene described as “The sky is vast, the wilderness boundless; when the wind blows the grass low, horses and sheep appear.” Genghis Khan Watch Hill is steep, rugged, majestic, and mysterious, named after the beautiful legend of Genghis Khan. Legend has it that during his military campaigns across the land, Genghis Khan once camped at the foot of this mountain to rest. When he woke up, he found two of his beloved steeds had gone missing. Extremely anxious, he gathered people from nearby to search together but they couldn’t find the horses. As the sun was about to set, he looked up and spotted an unnamed mountain before him. Without hesitation, despite the steep and treacherous terrain, he quickly climbed to the summit. From there, he scanned the horizon and joyfully discovered his two horses grazing leisurely in the far north, the residual glow of the sunset casting a radiant shimmer over the grassland. Delighted, Genghis Khan said, “Let this mountain be called ‘Siregul Hariyat’ (which translates to ‘Thousand-Mile Watch Hill’ in Chinese)!” To commemorate the great Genghis Khan, the locals later named this mountain “Genghis Khan Watch Hill.”
