Guangzhou Puppet Art Center

The Guangzhou Puppet Art Center officially opened on September 22, 2003, hosting the opening ceremony and first performance of the second National Puppet and Shadow Play Competition—the Golden Lion Awards—as well as seven subsequent public performance showcases.

The center has a total usable area of 3,581 square meters, featuring a main theater of 945.7 square meters with 452 seats, a small theater (for puppet teaching and tourism performances) of 156.4 square meters with 100 seats, a puppet exhibition hall of 81.3 square meters, a puppet production department and training rooms covering 1,258.8 square meters, a puppet audiovisual production room of 96 square meters, and art exchange, research, and office spaces of 629.1 square meters. It integrates puppet performances, production, sales, teaching, audiovisual production, art research, and exchange functions.

With its large space and comprehensive functions, the Guangzhou Puppet Art Center has significantly expanded the development potential of puppet art. It was recently designated as a Guangdong Provincial Cultural Tourism Attraction by the Guangdong Provincial Department of Culture. The artists of the Guangdong Puppet Theater are committed to combining puppet art with education and tourism, aiming to transform the Guangzhou Puppet Art Center into a wonderland that captivates children, a highlight of cultural tourism along the Pearl River, a landmark destination in the metropolis of Guangzhou, a cultural art base in the culturally rich province of Guangdong, and an international hub for puppet art research and exchange. With both the Guangdong Puppet Theater and the Guangdong Puppet and Shadow Art Society, along with the China Puppet and Shadow Art Society and the China Center of UNIMA (Union Internationale de la Marionnette), headquartered here, the convergence of diverse artistic styles from around the world and the integration of various puppet culture traditions will greatly enhance the center’s influence and outreach. This will help build the strength of puppet art culture, forge national creativity, vitality, and unity, making Lingnan puppetry even more brilliant and shining across China and the world.
