Zhoutouzui Park

Zhoutouzui Park is located on Binjiang West Road, facing the White Swan Hotel and Fangcun Embankment across the river, covering an area of over 20,000 square meters.

Zhoutouzui stands as a testament to the heroic resistance of the people of Guangzhou against British invaders. Following the First Opium War, the Qing government signed a series of unequal treaties with imperialist powers. On April 3, 1847, British forces dispatched warships into the Pearl River to pressure the Qing court, making unreasonable demands to lease land at Zhoutouzui in Henan. Surprisingly, these demands were agreed to by Viceroy of Liangguang Qiying. Between May 15 and 17, British invaders sent a survey team to measure the land at Zhoutouzui, attempting to forcibly occupy it through intimidation. Upon learning of this, the people of Zhoutouzui gathered at Shuangzhou Academy—. On the 20th, over 3,000 residents from 48 villages in Henan marched to the British merchant house—, and over one hundred thousand citizens of Guangzhou rose up in support. Intimidated by the strong opposition from the people of Guangzhou, the British invaders were forced to halt their plans to lease the land at Zhoutouzui, marking a complete victory in the anti-British struggle at Zhoutouzui.

As part of Guangzhou’s urban improvement initiative known as the “Three-Year Mid-Term Transformation,” this site was developed into an open public park. The park is shaded by lush trees and features a circular cultural plaza with a diameter of about 30 meters. A large iron anchor standing four meters tall is erected in the center of the plaza. This anchor serves as a symbol of the long-standing historical ties between China and Oman.
