Guangzhou Haizhu National Wetland Park (Haizhu Wetland Park) is a national-level wetland park.

Haizhu National Wetland Park (abbreviated as Haizhu Wetland) is located in the southeastern part of Haizhu District, in the central urban area of Guangzhou. To its north lies the Pazhou Convention and Exhibition Center, to its south the University Town, to its east the International Bio Island, and to its west it spans the city’s new central axis. Covering a total area of 1,100 hectares, it is the largest and most beautiful national wetland park in the central urban area of a megacity in China, truly the “green heart” of Guangzhou. The wetland features an intricate network of waterways, swaying green trees, the fragrance of various fruits, and the sight of birds flying and fish leaping. It embodies the essence of a thousand-year-old fruit-based agricultural culture, blends the vibrancy of the metropolis with the beauty of natural ecology, and showcases the unique characteristics of delta city lakes and riverine wetlands. It serves as an important migratory route for birds, the birthplace of Lingnan fruits, and a hub of Lingnan folk culture.

Haizhu National Wetland Park

[Haizhu Lake – A Fusion of Water Conservancy Engineering and Wetland Ecology] Haizhu Lake is the first large-scale ecological project in Haizhu District that integrates water conservancy engineering. Together with six surrounding waterways, including the Shiliugang River, it forms a water network pattern of “one lake, six veins, and six waterways encircling the lake,” naturally creating the picturesque scene of “gold inlaid with jade.” Haizhu Lake aligns in a straight line with the Canton Tower, Flower City Square, and CITIC Plaza, making it the ecological focal point of Guangzhou’s new central axis.

[Wetland Phase I – Wetland Scenery Complemented by Lingnan Culture] Haizhu Wetland Phase I is the core area and ecological demonstration zone of Haizhu Wetland. This phase emphasizes integrating the local cultural characteristics of the Lingnan water town into the wetland scenery, using grand and majestic Lingnan-style archways and the historic wok-ear houses as iconic structures of the wetland. Here, you can stroll along the lakeside willows, admire chrysanthemums and lotus flowers; you can set off from Huazhou Ancient Ferry to explore ancient Lingnan imprints; you can take a boat ride through misty waters, watch the fluttering silk ribbons and enjoy the reflections of ancient trees and sails; you can wander through the urban countryside, enjoying leisure and marveling at nature’s boundless gifts.

[Wetland Phase II – Highlighting Natural Wilderness and Biodiversity] Haizhu Wetland Phase II focuses on “nature, ecology, and wilderness,” striving to enhance biodiversity. Building upon the original orchards, the wetland improves habitats through connecting water systems, introducing clean flowing water, enriching vegetation, and restoring ecosystems, creating an ideal environment for birds to inhabit, breed, and forage—truly a paradise for birds. Once completed, Wetland Phase II will connect with Haizhu Lake and Wetland Phase I to form a 5,476-acre orchard wetland scenic area, together constructing an idyllic retreat in the heart of a global metropolis.

[Urban Green Core] Guangzhou’s new central axis runs through the wetland, where the Pazhou International Convention and Exhibition Center complements the millennia-old trading port of Huangpu Ancient Port within the wetland. The new landmark, the Canton Tower, casts its reflection on the lake, while CBD neon lights shimmer through the woods—Haizhu Wetland is a rare urban wetland in China, where lush orchards serve as a central leisure area right at citizens’ doorsteps.

Transportation information

1. Take bus routes 583, 264, 761, or 779 to Guangzhou Dadao South Road Intersection Station, or take Metro Line 3 to Exit B (Haizhu Lake Park) at Datang Station on Xinzhou Road, then walk 200 meters east.

2. Take bus routes 14, 45, 206, 250, 264, 270, or 762 to Xinjiao Middle Road (Longtan) Station to reach the demonstration area.
