This solid and unadorned brick building has withstood nearly a century of vicissitudes, carrying within it a rich history. Located at No. 555 in the northwest area, Java Hall now serves as the building for the School of Physics Science and Engineering Technology. On its north-facing wall is embedded a marble plaque, on which golden characters are engraved in intaglio. These characters read “Java Hall,” inscribed in elegant and clean regular script by the renowned paleographer and former professor of our university, Rong Geng. The signature is also very simple, featuring only the two characters “Rong Geng” filled in black, without a seal or the year of inscription.

The term “Java” refers to the island of Java in Indonesia. Why was a building on the campus named after Java? This goes back to Zhong Rongguang, the first Chinese president of Lingnan University. In 1919, President Zhong Rongguang traveled to various parts of Java in Indonesia to raise funds from overseas Chinese for the construction of university dormitories. During his five-week campaign in Java, he received enthusiastic support from the local overseas Chinese community, raising a total of 70,000 Hong Kong dollars. This four-story building began construction in 1920 and was completed the same year, serving as the first student dormitory for Lingnan University students. To commemorate the sincere contributions of the overseas Chinese from Java, it was named “Java Hall.”

Java Hall began construction in 1920 as a four-story building. It is currently the building for the Department of Mechanics at Sun Yat-sen University, located to the south of the Electronics Department Building, also known as Lok Yew Hall.
