To the west of Magangding, there is a relatively concentrated cluster of eight red-brick buildings collectively known as the “Former Lingnan University Affiliated Primary School Building Complex.” Among them, the only one with a specific name located in the center of the building area is the “Tan Kah Kee Hall.” Situated at No. 341 in the northeast area, it is currently used by the Coastal Ocean Research Center. Unlike other buildings where plaques are typically mounted above or to the side of the main entrance, the plaque of Tan Kah Kee Hall is embedded in a small wall in front of the western entrance. It is also made of white marble with dark green engraved text. The stone plaque bears the inscription “Tan Kah Kee Memorial Hall,” written in Qin-style clerical script by Mr. Shang Chengzuo of Qizhai, whose bold and forceful strokes demonstrate his calligraphic precision—appearing both rustic and sharply defined.

Tan Kah Kee Hall was funded and built by Mr. Tan Kah Kee, a leader of the overseas Chinese community, as the auditorium for the then Lingnan University Affiliated Primary School. It was completed in June 1919. To commemorate Mr. Tan’s contributions to education, the auditorium was named “Tan Kah Kee Hall.” After Sun Yat-sen University moved to Kangyuan Garden in 1952, the affiliated primary school was also established here, marking the beginning of the “childhood connection” for the children of the university.
