Ma Yingbiao Guesthouse

No. 388, Northeast District. A red-brick building with arched doors and windows was once the “newest and most splendid guest facility.” Above the main entrance is embedded a white stone plaque, on which several barely legible ancient Chinese seal script characters are engraved in an elegant, refined, meticulously structured, and uniformly weighted calligraphic style that embodies the rustic charm and vitality of pictographs. These were inscribed by Mr. Shang Chengzuo and read “Ma Yingbiao Guesthouse.”

At the time, Lingnan University had no guesthouse. To address the need for accommodating guests and hosting small gatherings, Mr. Ma Yingbiao, the university’s first Chinese board member, donated funds to build a guesthouse. In his honor, it came to be known as the “Ma Yingbiao Guesthouse,” also referred to as the “Ma Yingbiao Guestroom.” The building was completed in 1922.

Old buildings always have their stories. Legend has it that during Chen Jiongming’s rebellion in 1922, Dr. Sun Yat-sen took refuge in this very building. The bullet holes on the south gable of Ma Yingbiao Guesthouse are said to be the “evidence” of this tale. Whether the legend is true remains a matter for history enthusiasts to investigate.
