Changwei Village Walled Houses

The Changwei Village Walled Houses are located in Changwei Natural Village, Liaoyuan Administrative Village, Luoba Town, Shixing County, Shaoguan City, Guangdong Province. Composed of a walled tower and residential buildings, they face south and were built during the Qing Dynasty. The complex is 52 meters wide and 92.2 meters deep. The walled tower is rectangular, has four floors, and is 15 meters high. The lintel is inscribed with “Rise of Culture and Literature” and was established by Zengsheng Hall in the Year of Yimao, the fifth year of the Xianfeng reign (1855 AD) of the Qing Dynasty. The entire residence is constructed from river stones, tiles, and timber. There is an inner courtyard in the center of the walled compound, with corridors (balconies) extending along all sides on the second floor. Wooden stairs lead to the upper levels. The outer wall is solid and sturdy, with the bottom layer being 1 meter thick. The residences are made of grey bricks, tiles, and timber. In the center is an ancestral hall with three halls and two courtyards. The side residences consist of two halls and four rooms each, with thin grey bricks paving the floors.

The Changwei Village Walled Houses are a significant new discovery from the third national cultural relics survey in Shixing County. The entire architectural complex is well-preserved and is a typical example of Hakka walled houses, holding important value for the study of Qing Dynasty Hakka residential architecture.
