Chengbei Village Ruins

The Chengbei Village Ruins are a cultural heritage site protected by Shixing County.

The Chengbei Village Ruins are located on the southern bank of the Moke River, north of Chengbei Village in Chengnan Town, Shixing County. Archaeologically, they date back to the late Neolithic Age. Trial excavations were conducted in 1974. A 1-meter-thick cultural layer was found in a 100-meter cross-section along the riverbank. Excavated artifacts include pottery vessels such as jars, pots, zun, and dou made of clay, with decorative patterns primarily consisting of double-line rectangular grids and vein patterns. Stone tools found include long adzes, stepped adzes, knives, spears, net sinkers, and more. At the bottom of one ash pit, a single flaked pointed stone tool was discovered. Three semi-circular hearth remains were also found, each with a diameter of 80 cm and a depth of 20 cm, containing scattered pottery fragments and fire-burnt soil lumps.

In 1982, the People’s Government of Shixing County designated the site as a cultural heritage protection unit.

Chengnan Town: Originally part of the ancient Cathaysia landmass, Chengnan Town has been the site of numerous archaeological discoveries since 1975, including ancient ruins, burial sites, and relics. Research indicates that human habitation in the Chengnan area dates back approximately 6,000 years.

Throughout the long course of history, due to warfare and natural disasters, populations from the Central Plains (modern-day Fujian and Jiangxi regions) migrated southward several times. They settled in the Shixing Basin — the largest basin in northern Guangdong — making this fertile land their home, where they lived, worked, and thrived across generations.
