Ancient Well at Mashixu

The ancient well at Mashixu is located within the Mashixu market area in Mashixu Town, Shixing County, Shaoguan City. It is a Qing Dynasty-era well. The well is encircled by a circular well curb carved from red sandstone, standing 0.58 meters high and 0.13 meters thick. The circular well wall is built from dozens of red sandstone blocks, with a diameter of 1.3 meters, a depth of 15 meters, and water depth of 5 meters. The well platform is paved with river pebbles. According to local villagers, this well has a history of 300 years. Since the establishment of the Mashixu market, this well was dug, flourishing most during the Kangxi era of the Qing Dynasty when hundreds of merchant boats passed by daily. Merchants bustling through the area often took rest here. Unfortunately, the washing basin on the well platform has been destroyed, and the well is now surrounded by residential houses.

It covers an administrative area of 198 square kilometers, situated at 114°08’41” east longitude and 25°01’53” north latitude. To the east it neighbors Nanxiong, to the south it connects with Dun'gang Town, to the west it borders Taiping Town, and to the north it is backed by Beishan Township of the county and Baishun Town of Nanxiong.
