Former Site of the Soviet Government of Zijin County
The former site of the Soviet Government of Zijin County is a cultural relic protection unit of Guangdong Province, a classic red tourism destination, and a patriotic education base.
The former site of the Soviet Government of Zijin County is located at Huzicang, Paozi Village, Suqu Town, Zijin County.
In December 1927, the Soviet Government of Zijin County was established under the leadership of the Communist Party of China and with strong support from the troops of the Nanchang Uprising ("August 1st" Uprising) (the Red Second Division), with Zhong Yiqiang as its chairman. This was a victorious outcome of the Third Dongjiang Uprising and one of the first groups of Soviet governments in China.
The site was originally built during the Qing Dynasty as a grain storage facility belonging to Huang Zhenyun, a major landlord in Huangbu. During the people's commune period, it was repurposed as the site of a commune forestry farm and underwent alterations. It suffered severe damage during the Cultural Revolution. In 1977, the county government reclaimed ownership, carried out repairs and restoration, and designated it as a county-level cultural relic protection unit. In 2002, it was comprehensively restored on-site and in its original style. The building faces east and has a five-bay, two-courtyard layout with wing rooms on the left side. It spans a total width of 19.5 meters and depth of 16 meters, featuring a purlin and gable wall structure. It has a flush-gable roof covered with gray tiles, brick walls, a stone foundation, a floor paved with blue bricks, an open area covered with river stones, surrounded by walls, and a gate on the front right. The left secondary room of the first courtyard was formerly the bedroom of Zhou Enlai, and the right secondary room of the second courtyard was formerly the bedroom of Peng Pai. Their personal living utensils from that time are preserved in the bedrooms. During the Second Revolutionary Civil War period, the outer walls of the entire house were painted red to symbolize the red revolutionary government.
In January 1994, it was designated as a patriotic education base by the Zijin County Committee and County Government. In November 1995, it was designated as a patriotic education base by the Heyuan Municipal Committee and Municipal Government. In December 1995, it was designated as a key cultural relic protection unit by the Heyuan Municipal Government. In January 2005, it was recognized as a "red tourism" attraction by provincial and municipal tourism authorities. In June 2011, it was designated as a patriotic education base by the Publicity Department of the Guangdong Provincial Committee.
