Site of the Blood Field

The Site of the Blood Field is a cultural relic protection unit of Zijin County and also a patriotic education base.

The Site of the Blood Field is located at Gujingqiu in Paizi Village, Suqu Town. Originally a paddy field, the site’s square covers an area of approximately 1,300 square meters.

In April and October of the lunar calendar in 1928, the Kuomintang reactionaries carried out two mass slaughters of revolutionary civilians, killing over 450 people. In 1976, the Blood Field Square was built to commemorate the victims. It was renovated in 2008 and further restored in 2011. The Site of the Blood Field faces southeast and backs northwest. Red grass is planted in the field, and protective walls have been built along the back and sides. The front of the field is a square paved with marble in the center and river pebbles on the sides. Cypress trees are planted around the square, and a memorial stele stands on the right side. The stele is constructed from cement bricks, topped with a square top and a cement base, coated with stone finish on the exterior. It is 2.5 meters high and 1.75 meters wide. The inscription, carved in intaglio on bluestone, describes the atrocities of the two massacres.

In January 1987, it was designated as a key cultural relic protection unit by the Zijin County Government. In January 2009, it was recognized as a patriotic education base by the Zijin County Party Committee and County Government. In November 2010, it was listed as a patriotic education base by the Heyuan Municipal Party Committee and Municipal Government. In June 2011, it was declared a patriotic education base by the Publicity Department of the Guangdong Provincial Committee.
