Martyrs' Monument to Zhang Ziyu

The Martyrs' Monument to Zhang Ziyu is a cultural heritage site under the protection of Zijin County, a classic red tourism attraction, and a patriotic education base.

The Martyrs' Monument to Zhang Ziyu is located beside the playground of Xishan Primary School in Paizi Village, Soviet Area Town, Zijin County.

Zhang Ziyu (1899–1928) initiated the establishment of the first peasant association in Zijin County—the Paizi Township Peasant Association—in 1923 and served as its president. He joined the Chinese Communist Party in 1925 and organized the peasant self-defense forces of southern Zijin in 1927 to participate in the “April 26” uprising. In March 1928, he lost contact with his troops during a breakout in Luofeng, Luofu, and returned to Paizi to gather forces, quickly reviving the revolutionary struggle in the Soviet Area. He commanded members of the Red Guards to continue guerrilla activities. In August of the same year, he was captured due to betrayal, endured severe torture, and never revealed any communist secrets. He was executed in October at the age of 29.

The Martyrs' Monument to Zhang Ziyu was initially built in 1977 and rebuilt in 2011, covering an area of over 100 square meters.

In January 2009, it was designated as a key cultural relics protection unit by the Zijin County Government. In March 2009, it was recognized as a patriotic education base by the Zijin County Committee and County Government. In November 2010, it was listed as a patriotic education base by the Heyuan Municipal Committee and Municipal Government. In June 2011, it was announced as a patriotic education base by the Publicity Department of the Guangdong Provincial Committee.
