Martyrs' Tomb of Dong Lang

The Martyrs' Tomb of Dong Lang is located in Wuxing Village, Longwo Town, Zijin County.

Dong Lang (April 24, 1894 – October 1932), originally named Dong Jiazhì and also known as Zhongming, was from Dongjiahe Village, Ping’an Township, Jianyang County, Sichuan Province (now part of Chengdu City). He joined the Communist Party of China while studying at the Whampoa Military Academy in 1924. He was one of the early leaders of the Chinese Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Army. In August 1927, he participated in the Nanchang Uprising, then led his troops southward. Under the leadership of the Dongjiang Special Committee of the Chinese Communist Party, his unit was reorganized into the 4th Regiment of the 2nd Division of the Workers’ and Peasants’ Revolutionary Army (also known as the Red 2nd Division), where he served successively as regimental commander, divisional commander, and concurrently regimental commander. By the end of October, with the support of peasant militias, he captured the county towns of Haifeng and Lufeng, achieving victory in the third armed uprising in Haifeng-Lufeng. In January 1928, he led two regiments to attack Zijin and Wuhua, dismantling strongholds of landlord militias, launching land reforms, and expanding the red-controlled areas. He left Dongjiang in early 1929. In October 1930, he was appointed Chief of Staff of the Fourth Red Army. In September 1932, he led his forces to cover the breakout of the Xiang-E’bian Special Committee headquarters through heavy enemy encirclement, reaching the Jiangling and Shagang areas of the Honghu Revolutionary Base in Hubei Province. In October, during the political purges carried out by ultra-left opportunists, he was falsely accused and wrongfully executed at the age of 38. In May 1954, he was posthumously recognized as a revolutionary martyr.

To commemorate Dong Lang, Zijin County erected a memorial tomb in the old revolutionary base area (Wuxing Village, Longwo Town) where he once fought. The tomb was built in 1954, facing east and situated west. The tombstone stands 1.5 meters high, 0.5 meters wide, and 0.2 meters thick. It is constructed of brick with a cement-rendered surface, and inscribed on the front with “Martyrs' Tomb of Dong Lang,” topped with a five-pointed star.
