Former Site of the Zijin Independent Brigade Firearms Repair Workshop of the Seventh Detachment of the Dongjiang Column

The former site of the firearms repair workshop of the Zijin Independent Brigade, Seventh Detachment of the Dongjiang Column, is located in Juanpeng Village, Shangyi Town, Zijin County.

In December 1942, to resist the Japanese invasion and establish an anti-Japanese guerrilla base in the enemy’s rear, Zeng Xuexiu, the squadron leader of the Dongjiang Brigade of the Guangdong People’s Anti-Japanese Guerrilla Forces, was ordered by Zeng Sheng to return to Juanpeng Village in Shangyi, Zijin County. Together with Zeng Fan, he mobilized over 80 young locals to join the army and formed the Zijin Local Anti-Japanese Regular Brigade. Zeng Xuexiu served as the political instructor, while Zeng Fan was the brigade commander. At the same time, a firearms repair workshop was established at Peifeng Academy to manufacture weapons, enabling universal armed resistance in Juanpeng and facilitating anti-Japanese activities. In February 1945, the Zijin Local Anti-Japanese Regular Brigade was reorganized into the Zijin Independent Brigade, Seventh Detachment of the Dongjiang Column, with Zeng Xuexiu as the political instructor and Zeng Fan as the brigade commander.

Peifeng Academy is a building constructed with earthen materials. Due to long-term lack of management and maintenance, most of it has now collapsed.

Shangyi Town is located in the southwestern part of Zijin County, at 114°48′ east longitude and 23°17′ north latitude, covering an area of 173 square kilometers. It borders Lantang Town of Zijin County to the east, Songkeng Town of Huidong County to the south, Dalan Town of Huicheng District, Huizhou City, to the west, and Haoyi Town and Feng’an Town to the north.

Shangyi Town is situated along the upper and middle reaches of the Shangyi River, a tributary of the Qiuxiang River. The terrain is distributed in a belt-like pattern along both banks of the Shangyi River. The land is higher in the east and west, and lower in the north and south, surrounded by mountains on all sides, sloping from northwest to southeast to form a long, narrow strip resembling the shape of a boat.
