The ruins of the Paizi Peasant Self-Defense Squad Headquarters are located in Paizi Village, Suqu Town, Zijin County.

In January 1923, after Chen Jiongming betrayed Sun Yat-sen’s democratic revolution and entrenched himself in the Dong River area, he nurtured a group of cronies who engaged in all sorts of villainy. On one occasion, his troops rampaged through Longwo and Paizi, looting homes and stealing horses belonging to Zhong Daoshan and Zhong Caiwen. The village leader Zhong Leshan, commanding a force of just over ten men, ordered an ambush along a back road at Chixi and defeated Chen Jiongming’s troops. Upon learning of this, Chen Jiongming immediately ordered the “suppression” of Paizi.

In March 1923, the Paizi Township Peasant Association was established. To thwart Chen Jiongming’s plot to “attack” Paizi, Zhong Leshan proposed that the village’s armed forces be placed under the unified command of the Paizi Township Peasant Association. He also advocated launching a surprise night attack on the bandits Huang Yapin and Huang Yinquan, who were plundering at Shimenli on the road from Paizi to Gaotan, to expand the ranks. The operation was a success, seizing 21 rifles and one “Golden Mountain Pen” rifle. Following this, more villagers joined the association, bringing with them various weapons such as bullets, gunpowder, spears, broadswords, and sewing needles. The Paizi Township Peasant Self-Defense Squad was then formed, electing Zhong Leshan as captain and Zhong Yipeng as vice-captain. This was the first peasant militia in Zijin County.

The former headquarters was the home of Zhong Yipeng. Due to years of disrepair, it has now collapsed.
