Former Residence of Gu Dacun

The former residence of Gu Dacun is a cultural relic protection unit of Meizhou City.

The former residence of the patriotic revolutionary Gu Dacun is located on Youxingjing in Youhe Village, Meilin Town, Wuhua County. It was built during the Jiaqing era of the Qing Dynasty. Originally named “Golden Mountain’s Exquisite Beauty,” the residence features a traditional three-courtyard quadrangle layout, with one wing house on each side. Its walls were constructed from lime and sand rammed earth, and the total floor area is approximately 800 square meters. The residence was set on fire by enemies three times, leaving behind broken walls and ruins, though part of the left wing house has been restored through multiple government funding efforts. Inside the residence, a stone statue of Gu Dacun, along with related cultural relics and photographs, are displayed for public viewing and commemoration. In 1984, it was designated as a cultural relic protection unit of Wuhua County.

In January 2014, it was announced as a municipal-level cultural relic protection unit by the Meizhou Municipal People's Government.

Gu Dacun (1897–1966)

Gu Dacun, courtesy name Yongxin and alias Huxian, was a native of Wuhua, Guangdong Province. He was the seventh of nine siblings. Orphaned of his father at a young age and raised by a stepmother, he suffered mistreatment within the feudal family. In the 9th year of the Republic of China (1920), he was admitted to the Guangdong Public Law and Politics Specialized School. Influenced by figures such as Chen Duxiu and Chen Gongbo, he gradually embraced communist ideology. On the eve of his graduation in the 13th year of the Republic (1924), he joined the Chinese Communist Party through the introduction of Huang Guoliang and Song Qing.
