Former Residence of Li Weiguang

The former residence of Li Weiguang is a cultural relic protection unit of Guangdong Province.

The former residence of Li Weiguang is located in Huangpu Village, Huacheng Town, Wuhua County. Li Weiguang was one of the six military zhuangyuan in Guangdong’s history. He held positions such as Imperial Bodyguard, Left Battalion Militia Officer of Guangxi Tizhao, Mid-Battalion Militia Officer of the Water Forces suppressing unrest in Huangyan, Zhejiang, Lieutenant Colonel of Fenghuomen, Fujian, Deputy Commander of Min’an Command, and Commander-in-Chief of Nan’ao. In his later years, he returned to his hometown due to illness. Li Weiguang was highly skilled in naval warfare, repeatedly quelling pirates, resisting Japanese invaders, and defending Taiwan, earning remarkable military achievements. He was granted the hereditary title of “Military General of Merit” across four generations. The residence is a classic example of Hakka residential architecture, featuring three halls, four wings, and one enclosed dragon structure. In front of the house there is a courtyard, screen wall, revolving gate, and moon pond. The entire building has rammed grey-sand walls, wooden rafters with gable-and-hip tile roofs, and the structure is well-preserved. Inside the main hall, there are still preserved a 2.5-meter-long, 64-kilogram iron broadsword and martial stone used by the zhuangyuan for training, as well as gold and wood-carved plaques bestowed by the emperor or gifted by notable figures, such as “Zhuangyuan Jidi” (Top Scholar in Martial Exams), “Imperial Bodyguard,” “Huiyuan” (Top Scholar in Metropolitan Exams), “Jinshi” (Advanced Scholar), “Shi Aiguo En” (Generations of Patriotic Grace), and “Shi Shou Enlun” (Generations of Received Grace). In September 1994, it was listed as a county-level cultural relic protection unit.

In 2010, it was announced by the People's Government of Guangdong Province as part of the Sixth Batch of Provincial Cultural Relic Protection Units.

Li Weiguang (1735–1793), courtesy name Zuojie, art name Taoxu, was a native of Huangpu Village, Huacheng Town. In the 25th year of the Qianlong reign (1760), during the Gengchen Year’s Imperial Examination, he passed the provincial martial arts examination as a military juren (recommended candidate). In the 37th year of Qianlong (1772), he went to the capital to take the metropolitan examinations, achieving first place in the first class of the Renchen Year’s Imperial Examination. He was appointed as a First-Class Imperial Bodyguard, served in the ceremonial guards, and accompanied Emperor Qianlong on a hunting trip at the Mulan Hunting Grounds.
