Canghai School

Canghai School is a cultural heritage site protected by Jiaoling County.

Canghai School is located in Baima Village, Changtan Town, Jiaoling County, Meizhou City, Guangdong Province. Built during the Qing Dynasty, it was originally known as "Qinghua Academy." In the 28th year of the Republic of China (1939), Tu Sizhong, a former Lieutenant General of the Nationalist Party from the county, established an agricultural and forestry technical school here to commemorate the educational spirit of Qiu Fengjia (also known as Canghai), and renamed it “Canghai School”; it was renovated once in 1997. The building faces east and is situated westward, consisting of a main hall and wing rooms, laid out in a traditional three-hall, two-wing style enclosed structure. It has a single-entry, three-bay layout, with a total width of 37.36 meters, a total depth of 48.87 meters, comprising 24 rooms in all, covering a land area of approximately 1,826 square meters and a built-up area of about 870 square meters. It features a flush-gable roof, gray tile covering, and rammed earth walls made of lime, sand, and clay. The main façade is concave-shaped, with a door frame made of granite slabs. The lower hall serves as the entrance foyer, supported by round wooden columns above and square granite columns below, with a post-and-lintel wooden beam structure. Symmetrical corridors are located on both sides between the lower hall and the middle hall. The middle hall is an open space, one step higher than the lower hall, supported by multiple round granite columns, also featuring a post-and-lintel wooden beam structure, with circular granite windows on the side walls. Symmetrical corridors are also found on both sides between the middle hall and the upper hall, with post-and-lintel wooden beams and a spacious central courtyard. The upper hall is an open main hall, one step higher than the middle hall, with ink-wash painted dado walls. The left and right wing rooms are symmetrically arranged. This building is one of the early educational venues in Jiaoling County and holds certain value for the study of the development history of early education in the county. In 1985, it was listed as one of the first batch of county-level cultural heritage protection units by the Jiaoling County People's Government.

Baima Village: Located in Jiaoling County, Meizhou City, Baima Village lies to the west of Shikou River. The village administers 22 villager groups, with 603 registered households and a population of 2,269. It covers a total area of 3.26 square kilometers, with cultivated land spanning 1,510 mu. The village enjoys a subtropical monsoon climate, with an average annual temperature of 21°C and an annual precipitation of about 1,700 mm. The main cash crops are Shatian pomelo and rice, with the village’s specialty economic income totaling 1.35 million yuan, and the previous year’s total rural economic income amounting to 35,800 yuan.
