Shizhai Red Army Road

Shizhai Red Army Road is a cultural relic protection unit of Jiaoling County and a classic red tourism attraction.

Shizhai Red Army Road is located in Shizhai Village, Nanqi Town, Jiaoling County, Meizhou City, Guangdong Province. On the evening of October 23, 1929, Zhu De led six to seven thousand soldiers of the Red Fourth Army through this road, after which local people named it “Red Army Road.” It runs in a southeast–northwest direction. The path consists of uneven mountain stones forming steps that twist from the base of the mountain all the way up to Duimen Mountain, connecting to Yuantan Village in Songyuan Town, Meixian District. The entire route is approximately 5,000 meters long, with an average width of about 1.20 meters and a total area of around 6,000 square meters. On the evening of October 23, 1929, Zhu De led six to seven thousand soldiers of the Red Fourth Army from Songyuan Town, Meixian District, through this ancient road into Shizhai Village, Nanqi Town, Jiaoling County, where they rested overnight. The local villagers offered their limited food supplies and a local specialty—red mushrooms—and even cooked them into red mushroom porridge to serve the Red Army soldiers. Zhu De praised the delicious taste of the porridge. Later, Zhu De promoted revolutionary policies at the Guo Ancestral Hall, calling on villagers to rise against landlords and redistribute land, and helped establish the Shizhai Village Peasant Red Guards. On the morning of October 24, Zhu De led the Red Fourth Army from Shizhai Village to Jiaoling County Town. On October 25, they departed from Jiaoling County Town, passed through Xinpu and Shishan in Meixian District, and attacked Meixian County Town. The “Red Army Road” was originally an ancient commercial and official route leading north from Songyuan Town, Meixian District, to Fujian. Its construction date is unknown. The Red Army Road preserves the footprints of revolutionaries and reflects the transportation conditions of the time, making it of great significance for studying the revolutionary history of Jiaoling County. In 2014, it was designated as part of the sixth batch of county-level cultural relic protection units by the Jiaoling County People’s Government.

Shizhai Village: Located in the central-eastern part of Nanqi Town, Jiaoling County, Meizhou City, Shizhai Village administers 20 villager groups, with 593 registered households and a population of 2,075. The village covers a total area of 14.85 square kilometers, including 1,604.38 mu of arable land. The annual average temperature is 21.7°C, and annual rainfall is about 1,304 mm, characterized by a subtropical maritime monsoon climate.
