Suburban Lingxing Gate

The Suburban Lingxing Gate is a cultural relic protection unit of Jiaoling County.

The Suburban Lingxing Gate is located in front of the Zhuangyuan Bridge within the County People's Primary School in Chengjiao Village, Jiaocheng Town, Jiaoling County, Meizhou City, Guangdong Province. According to inscriptions on the stone archway, it was built in the 20th year of the Qianlong reign during the Qing Dynasty (1755). It faces south and is oriented north. Composed of a base and the main body, it is a six-pillared, five-bayed, sky-piercing stone archway, symmetrically arranged east-west and featuring two major façades facing north-south, all constructed from granite. It has a total height of 6.60 meters, a width of 12.70 meters, and a depth of 4.07 meters, covering an area of approximately 52 square meters. The entire stone archway is supported by six square pillars, each 0.37 meters wide, which also divide the structure into a central gate and side gates on the east and west. At the base of the southern pillars are gourd-shaped stone drums. The central bay’s lintel is composed of two layers of granite slabs; the lower layer is inscribed with three large characters “棂星门” (Lingxing Gate), with the inscription: “Built in the spring month of the 20th year of Qianlong.” The lateral bays on either side have walls made of lime-soil mixture; the lintels of the end bays are also composed of two layers, with the lower granite slab featuring relief carvings such as “carp leaping over the dragon gate.” The Suburban Lingxing Gate reflects the traditional values of ancient Hakka people, who emphasized culture and education. It is the only Lingxing Gate within Jiaoling County and holds significant reference value for the study of the region’s Hakka cultural heritage regarding the importance of literature and education. In 2014, it was designated as a sixth batch county-level cultural relic protection unit with approval from the Jiaoling County People's Government.
