Flag-shaped Stone Flagpole

The flag-shaped stone flagpole is a cultural relic protection unit of Jiaoling County.

The flag-shaped stone flagpole is located in Xuxi Village, Xinpuzhen, Jiaoling County, Meizhou City, Guangdong Province. It was built in the third year of the Tongzhi reign of the Qing Dynasty (1864). Facing southeast and situated northwest, it consists of five sections of granite components, with an overall height of approximately 13 meters. The bottom frontage is about 0.69 meters wide, the side is 0.35 meters wide, and it covers an area of around 4 square meters. The base of the flagpole is held by two clamping stone cases. The left clamping stone is inscribed in intaglio with “Erected in the cyclical year of Jiayin, the third year of the Tongzhi reign of the Great Qing (1864), by Zhong Yonghuang, who was granted the title of Fourth-Rank Official of the Guanglu Temple and promoted two levels to Assistant Director.” The right clamping stone is inscribed in intaglio with “Zhong Huaixun, who was awarded the rank of Tongzhi (Deputy Prefect), and Zhong Heshun, who donated to advance from the ninth rank to become a Registrar at the Imperial College, erected this.” The second section is a circular granite column with carved reliefs of a flying dragon, a mouse, and auspicious clouds in relief. The third, fourth, and fifth sections are circular stone columns that gradually decrease in diameter; the joints between each section feature funnel-shaped stone platforms. It holds certain reference value for studying the traditional local Hakka culture of the Qing Dynasty, which emphasized “valuing literature and education” and “bringing honor to ancestors,” as well as motivating future generations to strive for success. In 2010, it was approved by the People’s Government of Jiaoling County as part of the fourth batch of county-level cultural relic protection units.
