Jiaoling Shuikou Pagoda

Jiaoling Shuikou Pagoda is a cultural relic protection unit of Jiaoling County.

Shuikou Pagoda, also known as Wenkui Pavilion, is located on Shuikou Wen'gejian in Gao Si Village, Lanfang Town, Jiaoling County, Meizhou City, Guangdong Province. According to the *Jiaoling County Annals* (first edition, October 1992), it was built in the 15th year of the Daoguang reign during the Qing Dynasty (1835). The pagoda faces north and is situated to the south. It consists of an enclosing wall and the pagoda body, with an octagonal layout, a total width of 16.31 meters, a total depth of 16.31 meters, an overall height of about 20 meters, walls approximately 0.26 meters thick, and covers an area of about 266 square meters. The pagoda body has a five-story structure with an octagonal spire roof. The walls are made of rammed earth mixed with lime and sand, coated externally with cement plaster, and taper upwards by floor. Each level of the pagoda features a doorway: the first floor has a stone lintel arched entrance, while the others are arched doorways. The second-floor doorway is inscribed with “Wenhuan Tiannren” (Cultural Radiance Illuminating Heaven and Man); the third-floor doorway has overhanging eaves and is inscribed with “Tianguang Yunying” (Heavenly Light and Cloud Shadows). Each level has windows—four circular ones on the first floor, four circular and arched windows on the second and third floors, two arched windows on the fourth floor, and two circular windows on the fifth floor. Between the floors, the exterior is accented with four raised brick ridges, the third one from the bottom being serrated. Inside, there are wooden floors and a spiral staircase constructed from sandstone and blue bricks. The enclosing wall is made of a mixture of lime, sand, and stone, built in an octagonal shape surrounding the ancient pagoda. This pagoda is exquisitely constructed and beautifully shaped, holding certain value for the study of ancient pagoda architectural culture and craftsmanship in Jiaoling County. In 1985, it was listed as one of the first batch of county-level cultural relic protection units with the approval of the Jiaoling County People's Government.
