Zuanchun Manor

Zuanchun Manor is located in Daguang Village, Lanfang Town, Jiaoling County, Meizhou City, Guangdong Province. It was built in the 15th year of the Republic of China (1926) by three brothers, including Tang Shaoyan, overseas Chinese from Indonesia. The manor faces southeast and is situated to the northwest. It consists of an outer gate, enclosing walls, a threshing ground, the main hall, wing rooms, a flower terrace, and an encircling dragon structure. It follows a two-hall, three-wing, two-story enclosed courtyard layout, with a single-entry, five-bay structure. The total width is 60.1 meters, the total depth is 43.1 meters, comprising 70 rooms in total, covering an area of approximately 2,250 square meters, with a built-up area of about 2,220 square meters. The roof features hanging eaves and gray tiles, with rammed earth walls made of lime, sand, and clay. The doors and windows are made of cement prefabrication, and the lower parts of the walls are decorated with ink-painted patterns such as “Fu” (fortune) and “Shou” (longevity). The main façade is concave-shaped, supported by square stone bases and blue brick pillars, with a wooden beam structure forming the porch. The large stone door frame bears the engraved name “Zuanchun Manor.” The lower hall has a stone base and wooden pillars supporting a gilded, intricately carved wooden screen. The space between the lower and upper halls features symmetrical corridors on both sides with wooden lattice screens, and a spacious central courtyard. The upper hall is an open space, one step higher than the lower hall, with a stone base and wooden pillars supporting wooden screens decorated with painted scenes such as “Yuanming Loves Chrysanthemums” and “Hero Stands Alone.” The flower terrace is high and steep, with a semi-enclosed dragon structure and surrounding walls enclosing the main hall and wing rooms. The second floor mirrors the first in structure but differs in details, featuring wooden beams, cantilevers, stairs, and wooden flooring covered with a layer of rammed earth. The left outer gate has hanging eaves, while the right outer gate has a flush gable and a gablet roof. This building boasts a unique architectural style, with exquisitely carved wooden components, and holds significant value for studying the architectural culture of enclosed dragon houses in Jiaoling County as well as the history of overseas Chinese. In January 2014, it was designated as a municipal-level cultural heritage site by the People’s Government of Meizhou City.
