Qiaoxi Hakka Folk Culture Village
Qiaoxi Hakka Folk Culture Village is located in Qiaoxi Village, YanYang Town, Meixian District, approximately 4 kilometers from YanNanFei Tea Fields. It is a newly developed attraction within the YanNanFei Tea Fields Tourism Resort. The village currently has a population of 216, with over 50 permanent residents and more than 6,000 overseas Chinese. It is a cultural heritage site protected by Guangdong Province.
Originally called "Ketouxi" (Kowtow Stream), the village covers an area of about 1 square kilometer and is surrounded by mountains on all sides — Wuzhifeng to the east, Yi’an Fort to the west, Limading to the south, and Xianglu Peak to the north. Its majestic peaks and elegant summits present a striking sight. At the entrance of the village lies a colorful forest with seven ancient trees, each over a hundred years old and representing five different species: Hongnan (Lauraceae), Qinglan Tree (Xanthophyllaceae), Shanduying (Elaeocarpaceae), Baichemu (Myrtaceae), and Hemu (Theaceae). Among them, the Qinglan Tree is the largest of its kind ever discovered, both in China and internationally.
The most distinctive Hakka residential architecture in the village includes the Jishan House of the Zhu family and the Jinshan Hall, which features a reversed "Wei Long" layout. The Jishan House was initiated in the 28th year of the Guangxu reign during the Qing Dynasty (1902) by five brothers, including Qiyuan, the second son of the 17th-generation ancestor Weiqian of the Zhu family who had returned from Indonesia. It was completed in the 3rd year of the Republic of China (1914). Built against the mountain and beside the water, the house faces south and covers an area of 2,680 square meters, containing 70 rooms. It adopts a symmetrical central-axis horizontal square layout, consisting of a two-story rammed-earth building known locally as a “seven-bar house,” or “Qigang Lou.” Its architectural scale, craftsmanship, and cultural ambience are rare in eastern Guangdong, making it widely renowned. Another notable residence is the Shànqìng Building, which is around 110 years old. Covering a construction area of 500 square meters with 22 rooms, it is a reversed “Wei Long” style structure with the main hall facing outward. Its architectural design is unique among traditional Hakka enclosed round-house complexes and is extremely rare in eastern Guangdong’s Hakka regions.
The village also boasts several scenic spots. Its natural landscapes, Hakka customs, and historical development serve as a microcosm of a “village of culture,” a “village of overseas Chinese,” and a revolutionary base area, offering significant historical, artistic, and scientific research value. These features attract folklore scholars, architecture experts, and tourists from both China and abroad for visits and study.
