Qiaoxi Ancient Charm Scenic Area
• Nestled among surrounding mountains, Qiaoxi Ancient Charm showcases beautiful peaks and flowing streams, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the authentic charm of a traditional Hakka ancient village.
Located near Yan Nan Fei Tea Plantation, Qiaoxi Ancient Charm Scenic Area is abundant in tourism resources. Notably, sixteen Hakka traditional residences built during the Ming and Qing periods remain remarkably intact—simple in style yet grand in presence. Among them, the century-old Jishan Building stands out for its architectural scale, craftsmanship, and cultural ambiance, making it a unique gem of Hakka architecture. The scenic area, composed of stone bridges, streams, traditional houses, and ancient trees, paints a picturesque Hakka rural scene. It has been honored as one of Guangdong Province’s Top Ten Most Beautiful Ancient Villages. Here, you can experience the authentic Hakka lifestyle and folklore, appreciate the architectural artistry of traditional Hakka homes, explore the Hakka people’s cultural emphasis on education, admire the captivating scenery along the Qiaoxi River, and even delve into the historical mysteries surrounding Zhu Cilang, the last prince of the Ming Dynasty.
Originally called "Ketouxi" (Kowtow Stream), Qiaoxi Village spans approximately 1 square kilometer and is enclosed by mountains on all sides. To the east stands Wuzhi Peak, to the west Yian Fortress, to the south Limading, and to the north Xianglu Peak—each peak striking and majestic. At the village entrance lies a colorful forest with seven ancient trees, all over a hundred years old and representing five species: Hongnan (Lauraceae), Qinglan Tree (Xanthophyllaceae), Shorea roxburghii (Elaeocarpaceae), Rhodamnia dumetorum (Myrtaceae), and Schima superba (Theaceae). Among them, the Qinglan Tree is the largest known specimen of its kind worldwide.
The most distinctive Hakka residences in the village include the Jishan Building of the Zhu family and the Jishan Hall, a reverse-walled circular structure. The Jishan Building was constructed in 1902 (the 28th year of the Guangxu reign in the Qing Dynasty) by five brothers of the Zhu family, descendants of the 17th generation of a Hokkien overseas Chinese lineage, and completed in 1914 (the 3rd year of the Republic of China). Nestled against the mountain and beside the water, the building faces south and covers an area of 2,680 square meters, with 70 rooms in total. It follows a symmetrical, horizontally aligned square layout, consisting of a two-story rammed-earth building commonly known as a “Seven-Beam House.” Its architectural scale, craftsmanship, and cultural ambiance are rare in eastern Guangdong and have earned it widespread fame. Another notable structure is the Shangqing Building, approximately 110 years old, covering 500 square meters with 22 rooms. It features a unique reverse-walled circular layout, with its main hall facing outward—an uncommon design among traditional Hakka walled houses and particularly rare in eastern Guangdong’s Hakka region.
The village also hosts several attractions. Its natural landscapes, Hakka customs, and historical evolution serve as a microcosm of a “Cultural Village,” “Hometown of Overseas Chinese,” and revolutionary base, holding significant historical, artistic, and scientific value. These draw domestic and international folklorists, architectural experts, and tourists for visits and research.
