Chashan Ancient Village Tourist Area

Known as the "No. 1 Hakka Residential Village," Chashan Village is located to the west of Shuiche Town in Meixian District, approximately 30 kilometers from downtown Meizhou. The village got its name from an ancient oil-tea tree that once grew here. It was first established in the early Ming Dynasty, gradually flourished, and reached its peak in the late Qing Dynasty. There are currently 34 traditional residences preserved in the village, among which the Shaode Hall is a Ming Dynasty structure with over 500 years of history; there are also three buildings with over 300 years of history—Ehui Tower, Chuangyi Ancestral Hall, and Borong Tower. According to records, up until the abolition of the imperial examination system, Chashan Village had produced 48 individuals who held titles such as Jinshi (successful imperial examination candidate), Gongsheng (tribute student), or Jiansheng (imperial college student), and 16 title pillars still remain in the village. Notable modern and contemporary figures include Huang Junxuan, Huang Qixiang, Huang Ganying, as well as Singapore’s richest man Huang Yunhui and Indonesian tycoon Huang Kanghua (one of the initiators of the Meijiang Bridge project), among other military, political, and business elites. The profound cultural heritage and abundant architectural legacy highlight the simplicity and tranquility of the countryside, reflecting the Hakka people’s fine tradition of valuing education and scholarship. Hakka enclosed houses, Hakka customs, humanistic history, the hospitable Hakka people, the majestic ancient dwellings, along with the beautiful natural ecological environment and picturesque pastoral scenery, create a unique and superior tourism setting in Chashan Village.
