Waterwheel Kiln

The Waterwheel Kiln is a cultural tourism attraction.

The Waterwheel Kiln is located on the southern slope of Wakengkou in Shuiche Town, Meixian District, about 30 meters south of the Meijiang River. It dates back to the late Tang Dynasty and was discovered in 1982. Two kilns were excavated in 1985. Belonging to the mantou-type (dome-shaped) kiln category, it consists of three parts: a semicircular firing chamber, the main kiln room, and flues. The bottom of the kiln room is sloped, with the firing chamber situated lower than the kiln room, and the rear end of the kiln is narrower. Excavated pottery includes rollers and saggers; porcelain items comprise bowls, plates, saucers, basins, pots, and pillows. Most pieces are coated with bluish-yellow glaze, some with fine grayish-blue clay bodies, and both the interior and exterior are finished with bluish-gray or greenish glazes. Popular designs among bowls and plates include petal-shaped rims and flat disk feet. Similar artifacts have been unearthed in Thailand.

Shuiche Town: Shuiche Town is located in the southern part of Meixian District, with the town government based in Shuiche Township, about 30 kilometers from Meizhou City. It borders Jingyi and Jianda, Fengshun County to the southeast, Shejiang to the southwest, Meinan to the northeast, and Hexi, as well as Jingnan and Xinxu in Xingning City to the northwest, making it a remote old revolutionary base area. The Meijiang River flows from southwest to northeast, dividing the region into eastern and western parts. National Highway 206, the Guangzhou-Meizhou-Shantou Railway, and the Meizhou-Jieyang-Shantou Expressway run through the entire area, providing highly convenient transportation. During the Qing Dynasty, the eastern part of the river was called Longwen Fort, and the western part was known as Daxiao Li Fort.
