Former Residence of Zhang Minjie

The former residence of Zhang Minjie is a cultural relic protection unit of Guangdong Province.

The former residence of Zhang Minjie is located in Shiluogang Village, Tao Yao Town, Meixian District. The residence faces southeast and is situated to the northwest, covering a land area of 650 square meters with a built-up area of 1,000 square meters. It has a "convex" shaped floor plan. Constructed with a concrete frame structure, both the ground and second floors feature balcony-style corridors, with an arched corridor on the facade. A wooden staircase is set at the front of the main hall, ascending from the back wall where it splits into left and right flights about one-third up the height to reach the upper floor. Rooms are symmetrically arranged on both sides of the hall, following an identical layout. The residence is built against a hillside and enjoys a serene environment. It underwent renovation in November 1979.

Zhang Minjie (1885–1925) joined the Tongmenghui in his early years. A returned overseas Chinese from Malaysia and a devoted follower of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, he was an outstanding general of the Nationalist Revolutionary Army during the democratic revolution period. He achieved remarkable military accomplishments and was promoted to commander of the Second Army of the National Construction Army in 1924. In February 1925, he led his troops in the First Eastern Expedition. On April 25, while traveling by boat to attend a meeting in Shantou, the vessel capsized near the Xiangzi Bridge in Chaozhou, and he drowned in the flood. He was buried in Guangzhou. The Nationalist Government posthumously awarded him the rank of General. In 1958, the Central People’s Government conferred upon him the title of Revolutionary Martyr.

In 1987, the Meixian Municipal People’s Government designated it as a cultural relic protection unit. In 2015, the People’s Government of Guangdong Province listed it as a Guangdong Provincial Cultural Relic Protection Unit.

Tao Yao Town: Located in the northeastern part of Meixian District, Tao Yao Town borders Fujian Province (just a stone’s throw from the Fujian Qiandao Lake tourist area). It is a renowned revolutionary base in Meixian and the hometown of the patriotic general Zhang Minjie. The town covers an area of 118 square kilometers, with 139,100 mu of mountainous land, 15,000 mu of cultivated land, 15 village committees, 1 neighborhood committee, 158 villager groups, and a total population of 17,799.
