Introduction

Black River Mountain is a famous mountain on the island of Mauritius, located in the southwestern part of the island and close to the coast. The highest point of Black River Mountain is Little Black River Peak, which stands at 826 meters. The mountain features undulating peaks with numerous streams rushing between them. When the rainy season arrives, the streams swell and roar down the slopes, creating a stunningly beautiful landscape. On a slope known as “Cinmalet,” there is a colorful rectangular patch of land covering an area of about 0.5 square kilometers. This area displays layers of bright red, yellow, purple, orange, and other colored soils, all distinctly separated. Locals call it the “Five-Colored Earth.” No vegetation grows here. It is said that the “Five-Colored Earth” was formed when volcanic lava erupted and underwent chemical changes under intense sunlight. Black River Mountain is a settlement area for the Indian community in Mauritius. Every year on August 15th, local Indians dress in beautiful traditional attire, play waist drums, and dance the Sega dance late into the night. Tourists are also welcome to join in.
