South Luangwa National Park

South Luangwa National Park is a wildlife reserve in Zambia, covering an area of 9,050 square kilometers. It is located in the southeastern part of Zambia, at the southeastern foot of the Mafinga Mountains, along the middle reaches of the Luangwa River, northeast of the capital Lusaka. It is the second-largest national park in Zambia and is named after the Luangwa Gorge to its east, which is part of the East African Rift Valley. The 660-kilometer-long Luangwa River flows through the gorge, attracting wildlife that follows the water sources. As early as 1904, the area was designated as a game reserve by British colonists, and in 1972, the Zambian government established it as a national park.

South Luangwa National Park is renowned for its diverse wildlife. Among the animals, elephants and black rhinos are the most numerous, with several thousand of each. Additionally, antelopes, giraffes, wildebeests, lions, leopards, hippos, zebras, and jackals are commonly seen. Birds such as crowned cranes, marabous, and herons can be spotted nesting or flying near lakeshores or among flowering trees and grasses. From May to October, the weather is clear, pleasant, and dry, with low vegetation, and most wildlife gathers around rivers, lakes, streams, and springs—making it the best time for wildlife viewing. The park has modern lodges where visitors can stay, observe animal activities during the day, and listen to the sounds of cicadas and birds at night, creating an incredibly relaxing experience.
