Hassan Tower

Hassan Tower is located in the Moroccan city of Rabat and is the minaret of an unfinished mosque. It was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List in 1995. Starting in 1195, Hassan Tower was intended to be the largest minaret in the world. Construction of the mosque stopped in 1199, and the remaining part has never been built.

The construction of Hassan Tower was inspired by the minaret of the Koutoubia Mosque. Originally planned to reach a height of 86 meters, the tower stands at 44 meters due to the halt in construction. As the largest minaret in Morocco, it is built from red stone and, along with the unfinished mosque and the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, forms one of Rabat’s most significant historical sites and its most popular tourist attractions. The tower has six levels, and unlike other minarets, it does not have stairs or a staircase—instead, ramps connect the levels, allowing the muezzin on horseback to ride all the way to the top.
