Bardo Museum

Introduction: The Bardo National Museum is located in Bardo Square on the northwestern outskirts of Tunis, the capital of Tunisia. It is the most important archaeological and antiquities museum in North Africa. In the entire African continent, it is second only in size to Egypt's Cairo Museum. It is world-renowned for its extremely rich and splendid collection of mosaics. The museum is built on the site of former palaces and was created by converting parts of those palaces. It is a grand structure in Arabic architectural style. Officially opened in 1888, it was originally named the “Alaouite Museum.” After Tunisia gained independence in 1956, it was renamed to its current title. The museum houses over forty halls and galleries, with exhibits divided into sections covering prehistoric times, the Phoenician and Carthaginian periods, the Roman period, the Christian period, the Arab-Islamic period, and Greek artworks.
