Kerkouane and Its Necropolis

Kerkouane and Its Necropolis is located in the Nabeul Governorate and is the best-preserved ancient Carthaginian site to date, having only suffered partial damage in the 2nd century BC. The houses and tombs of the ancient Carthaginian city follow construction standards consistent with a well-developed urban planning system.

The layout of the city can be clearly seen around the ruins, with many house walls still standing, often featuring colorful clay. Some temple columns remain intact, and a small porch has revealed some mosaic bricks. Stone curbstones, doorstep steps, thresholds, and floors with simple mosaics are found throughout. Archaeologists are still active at Kerkouane, though the most valuable parts have likely already been excavated. Although lacking the grand, large-scale structures found in other Tunisian cities — no walls over five feet tall, and the tallest structure being a solitary stone column — Kerkouane appears better preserved in certain other aspects.

Here, the precise layout of each house and the entire city is clearly discernible. The items that best reflect the life of the ancient Phoenicians are the various bathing facilities, with some baths still retaining complete mosaic tiles and bathtubs.
