The Monastir Governorate is located in central-eastern Tunisia, on the southern coast of the Gulf of Hammamet in the Mediterranean Sea. The provincial capital, the city of Monastir, is 160 kilometers from the capital of Tunisia and 24 kilometers east of Sousse. This is the birthplace and burial place of former Tunisian President Habib Bourguiba. Within the city lies a mausoleum built by Bourguiba during his tenure for his own family. In addition, the Monastir Habib Bourguiba International Airport was established in his honor.

Monastir is a renowned tourist city in Tunisia, boasting 46 hotels with 19,000 beds. It has an international airport and a large-scale international marina built along the coast. Monastir is also a famous summer resort, home to the summer residences of national leaders. In the 8th century, Arabs constructed the first Islamic fortress in the Maghreb here, which is the oldest and largest Arab military structure in North Africa.
