In 1978, it was listed as one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Features One of Europe’s oldest salt mines that is still in operation. Located in the suburbs of Kraków, near the Carpathian Mountains. The Wieliczka Salt Mine, extending 135 meters underground, was discovered in the Neolithic Age and has a mining history spanning two thousand years. The salt mine features salt rock carvings that depict mining operations. These were painstakingly carved in their spare time by generations of unnamed miners who worked there over the centuries.
