Nazi Auschwitz-Birkenau Concentration Camp

Auschwitz-Birkenau is a small town in southern Poland that became infamous during World War II when Nazi Germany established the largest concentration camp there.

At the time, the area under the control of the Nazi German administration of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp covered 40 square kilometers. The camp complex consisted of three main camps and 39 smaller subcamps spread across the Silesia region in southern Poland. The camp was heavily fortified, surrounded by electrified barbed wire, and equipped with guard towers, gallows, gas chambers for mass murder using Zyklon B, and crematoria. It served as the execution site for Hitler’s policy of genocide.

During the postwar Nuremberg Trials, the commandant of Auschwitz-Birkenau, Rudolf Höss, confessed that up to 3 million people had died in the camp. Approximately 90% of the victims were Jews from various European countries. Most were killed in gas chambers using Zyklon B, while others died from forced labor, disease, individual executions, or so-called “medical experiments.” Auschwitz-Birkenau stands as a historical testament to the monstrous crimes committed by Nazi Germany.
