Kraków Old Town

Kraków Old Town, the former capital of Poland, is situated at the foot of Wawel Royal Castle. This 13th-century trading town boasts Europe’s largest open-air market and countless historic buildings, palaces, and churches adorned with lavish interiors. Other captivating remnants of this historic city include 14th-century fortress ruins, the medieval settlement of Kazimierz and its ancient synagogue in the southern part of the city, the Jagiellonian University, and the Gothic cathedral — the resting place of Polish kings.

Kraków’s Market Square spans 200×200 meters and serves as the focal point within the grid-like layout of the city blocks. Countless streets radiate outward from here, stretching all the way to the city walls. The city center has shifted over time but ultimately returned to the original medieval core and Market Square established in 1257. Red brick and stone are commonly used in the area’s architecture. The Old Town offers a vibrant tapestry of sights: the main Market Square, home to the famous Cloth Hall, is surrounded by churches, monasteries, bell towers, and square towers, while the surrounding areas feature a series of wealthy residences built during the 17th and 18th centuries.

In other parts of the city, Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque residences built by the middle class stand beneath the spires of churches. Kraków serves as an exemplar of a medieval European capital that evolved from a single castle into two dynamic emerging cities — a unique trait in Kraków’s urban development.
