Babia Góra National Park is located in the Beskid Żywiecki region of southern Poland, about 90 kilometers southwest of Kraków and close to Slovakia. Established in 1954, the park spans 33.92 square kilometers, with 31.98 square kilometers covered by dense forests. The highest peak in the park is Mount Babia, which stands at approximately 1,725 meters above sea level.

Due to the park’s exceptional natural value, it was designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1976. One of the key reasons for this recognition is its model distribution of vegetation zones, making Babia Góra an ideal site for mountain research. While hiking, you can observe a series of familiar ecological layers: first cultivated land, then beech forests, followed by mixed beech and spruce woods, higher up only spruce forests, even higher replaced by dwarf mountain pines, and finally the highest alpine zone with stony ground, dotted with sparse grass and lichens. The transition zone between the forest and the dwarf mountain pines is especially spectacular. In winter, the vast areas of dwarf spruces blanketed in thick frost resemble icy corridors sculpted by snow — a truly unforgettable sight.

The park boasts a rich diversity of animal life. You may encounter large mammals such as bears and lynxes, especially on the southern slopes. The forests are home to wolves, deer, foxes, and badgers, among others. Among the bird species, the endangered western capercaillie is particularly noteworthy. A member of the grouse family also known as the “wood grouse,” it can weigh up to 6 kilograms — a male capercaillie is no smaller than a turkey. There are over 120 bird species in Babia Góra National Park, including black grouse, owls, and the rare black stork, all worth spotting during your visit.
