Grand Ducal Palace

The Grand Ducal Palace is situated on Place Guillaume II (Knuedler) in the southern part of Luxembourg City, the capital, just north of Notre-Dame Cathedral. It was once the residence of the Grand Duke, the highest ruler of Luxembourg at the time. Having undergone multiple restorations, it was later connected to the former city hall building and was completely rebuilt by Spanish rulers. The palace’s architectural style is influenced by Italian Renaissance, and its interior features exquisite and elaborate decorations, including the main hall, the King’s rooms, and banquet halls.

Since 1817, the Grand Ducal Palace has served as the residence of the ruler. During World War II, when Luxembourg was occupied by Germany, the palace was used by the Nazis as a dance hall and ballroom. During this period, the palace suffered damage, with many pieces of furniture and artworks destroyed. In 1960, the palace underwent renovation, and from 1991 to 1996, it was completely refurbished. The interior of the palace was modernized according to current standards and styles, giving it a strong contemporary feel. Today, the Grand Ducal Palace also serves as the accommodation for other heads of state during official visits. Various forms of receptions are also held at the palace each year.
