Luxembourg City History Museum

The Luxembourg City History Museum was built in 1996. It is a national museum of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and also one of the most modern museums in contemporary Europe.

The museum has a majestic and magnificent exterior, with its 160-square-meter façade facing the street entirely inlaid with tempered glass. Visitors can walk down a staircase from the museum’s back entrance all the way to the first underground fortress built by the Romans two thousand years ago. The museum displays large-scale architectural models from six different periods, vividly reflecting the city’s developmental history from various perspectives. The sequence is as follows: the model of Luxembourg City at its initial establishment around the year 1000, the urban architecture model from the year 1500, the grand fortress model built by Spain in 1683, the expanded fortress model under Austrian rule in 1795, the city model from 1867, and the model of Luxembourg as a modern industrial and open city in 1910.

Among the oil paintings exhibited in the museum, there are those depicting exchanges of letters between Austrian kings and queens and the Duke of Luxembourg, as well as scenes showing Luxembourg’s resistance against Nazi invaders. In addition, visitors can also admire the beautiful scenery of the city from maps of Luxembourg in the past century.
