The Luxembourg American Cemetery and Memorial is one of the 14 overseas burial grounds established by the United States for soldiers who died in World War II. This area was liberated from German control on September 10, 1944, by the U.S. 5th Armored Division and served as a temporary burial ground starting December 29, 1944. Later, the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg donated the land for permanent use to the United States. The cemetery holds the remains of 5,076 American servicemen who died during the war, including female nurses, with 101 of them unidentified. At the center of the cemetery lies the grave of General George S. Patton, who died in a car accident in the United States after the war. In accordance with his wish to be buried alongside his soldiers, his remains were moved here. Not far from the American cemetery is also a burial site for German soldiers who died in the war.
