Wilhelm Square

Wilhelm Square is a town square in Luxembourg City, located in the southern part of Luxembourg. The western side of the square features Luxembourg’s characteristic irregularly shaped wide boulevards, while the northern side is bordered by Boulevard Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Wilhelm Square is also commonly known as “Knuedler,” which in Luxembourgish means “knot,” referring to the buckle on the belt worn by Franciscan monks.

The western half of Wilhelm Square is home to Luxembourg City Hall, situated in the southwest, while the eastern half is dominated by a equestrian statue of King William II. This king was both the monarch of the Netherlands and the Grand Duke of Luxembourg, after whom the square is named. The square is filled with numerous trees, especially around the statue of King William II. Wilhelm Square has now become a popular open-air music venue, hosting the free-to-public Rock um Knuedler rock concert annually since 1991, which has drawn crowds of up to 10,000 people. Starting in 1995, the square has also seen large-scale international concerts, growing increasingly popular among the public.
