Dumbarton
Introduction Dumbarton is located at the entrance to Loch Lomond and the Highlands, 23 kilometers west of Glasgow. The town is the ancient capital of the Britons of Strathclyde in the Strathclyde region, preserved through the passage of time.
Dumbarton Rock is a spectacular sight, and atop it stands Dumbarton Castle, which has been converted into a modern barracks and is open for most of the year. The Scottish Maritime Museum features a still-operational ship testing basin and a small tea room. About 16 kilometers downstream from the town lies the Erskine Bridge, spanning the river between the north and south banks.
