The Yellow River Gorge is located in the Zhungeer section of the Inner Mongolia–Shanxi–Shaanxi Yellow River Grand Gorge. This stretch of the gorge is uniquely scenic and picturesque. Within the gorge, Baozita is thrillingly majestic, Chengpo Ancient City features a mighty fortress atop steep cliffs, and the Wanjiazhai Water Control Project stands grand and imposing. The ancient stone-built Baozita village is situated in the center of the Wanjiazhai Reservoir area, surrounded by water on all sides with only a narrow land connection to the mainland. It got its name because it resembles a steamed bun inlaid along the banks of the Yellow River. Baozita is covered with massive rocks, has steep cliffs, and winding mountain paths that hug the ridges—thrilling and majestic. On Baozita lies the ancient military stronghold Cui Chengzhai, whose walls and gates remain intact. The stone houses within the old fortress are full of charm and have a unique appeal.

Chengpo Ancient City was built during the Western Xia Dynasty. Judging from its geographical location, it is believed to have been a key military stronghold of the Jin Dynasty’s Suzhou. The terrain is extremely rugged, and the site contains numerous cultural relics. Not far from the fortress lies the ancient tomb complex of the Western Xia at Dasha Ta, whose tombs are all adorned with murals—making them the only Western Xia mural tombs in the entire Yellow River basin. The Wanjiazhai Water Control Project tames the surging Yellow River, transforming high gorges into serene lakes and deep valleys into fairyland. Towering pines and cypresses hug the landscape on both banks, while peculiar peaks and strange rocks take on various forms—some resembling tigers or dogs, others humans or immortals, seemingly shaped by human imagination. The gorge is deep and winding, sometimes broad, sometimes narrow, with serene waters as smooth as a mirror. Being in this environment makes one forget all worldly honors and disgraces.
