Souter Lighthouse is located in the small village of Marsden in South Tyneside, Tyne and Wear, England, and is one of the most prominent landmarks along the northeast coast of England. Here, beneath the blue sky, white clouds, green land, and azure sea, stands the striking red-and-white Souter Lighthouse.

The seemingly serene coastline of South Tyneside actually harbors hidden dangers—many ships have run aground on its treacherous shoals, and cargoes have been seized by pirates. Therefore, Souter Lighthouse was built in 1871 to guide passing vessels. It was decommissioned in 1988 but continued to serve as a radio navigation beacon until its final closure in 1999. It is now managed and protected by the National Trust.

Today, Souter Lighthouse is open to visitors, offering a chance to experience the life of a lighthouse keeper. There is a reconstructed Victorian-era keeper’s cottage, as well as a variety of hands-on activities. For younger visitors, there is an outdoor play area and an adventure trail featuring fun crafts and cliff-top walks along the rocky shore. Climbing to the top of the lighthouse is a highlight, where you can see some of the still-functioning machinery and enjoy breathtaking views of the natural landscape stretching for miles.
