St. Mary's Lighthouse

St. Mary's Lighthouse is located on the tiny island of St. Mary's, which lies off the north coast of Whitley Bay on England’s northeast coast. This small rocky tidal island is connected to the mainland by a short concrete causeway that gets submerged during high tide.

St. Mary's Lighthouse and the adjoining lighthouse keeper's cottage were built in 1898 by the John Miller company of Tynemouth, using 645 blocks of stone and 750,000 bricks. The tower stands 38 meters tall and is entirely white, creating a striking landmark against the blue sky and sea. The lighthouse was decommissioned in 1984. Although St. Mary’s Lighthouse no longer functions as a working light, it is easily accessible to the public and now houses a small museum, visitor center, and café. The exhibits inside mainly showcase the history of the lighthouse, as well as the wildlife and natural environment of the surrounding area.

There are 137 steps from the base to the top of St. Mary's Lighthouse. Once at the top, visitors can see the original lamp room and enjoy breathtaking views of the northeast coast of England. If you prefer not to climb, you can also watch a video of the panoramic views from the top in the visitor center at the base.
