Pisha Sandstone Water Conservancy Scenic Area

The Pisha Sandstone Water Conservancy Scenic Area is a national AAA-level tourist attraction and a national water conservancy scenic area.

The Ordos Pisha Sandstone Water Conservancy Scenic Area is located in Nuanshui Township, Jungar Banner, Ordos City. It was established based on the sediment interception project in the middle reaches of the Yellow River, a key area of concentrated coarse sediment sources. As a soil and water conservation-oriented water conservancy scenic area, it covers an area of 677.7 square kilometers. The scenic area features typical loess landforms, with crisscrossing gullies and exposed Pisha Sandstone, and possesses uniquely distinctive geological landscapes. This area was once the most severely eroded region, with soil erosion covering 92.5% of the total area of the banner. To improve the ecological environment, Jungar Banner implemented a multi-pronged ecological restoration mechanism. After years of effort, the comprehensive management rate of soil erosion has reached 39.7%, the forest coverage rate has reached 27.3%, and the vegetation coverage rate has reached 73%, achieving remarkable results in ecological protection and restoration. Through scientific planning, the scenic area has developed a development concept centered on soil and water conservation and ecological restoration. By taking advantage of its unique characteristics and adapting tourism activities to local conditions, it has explored a typical model for developing soil and water conservation-oriented water conservancy scenic areas in arid regions of China.
