North York Moors National Park

North York Moors National Park is one of the UK’s most treasured natural assets, covering an area of 550 square miles. Designated as a national park in 1952, it is a wonderfully wild landscape. Here you’ll find purple heather, rugged coastal cliffs, ancient stone farmhouses, and wandering long-haired sheep—it’s the perfect setting for a romantic Wuthering Heights-style chase scene between lovers.

The moorland stretches from east to west, extending from rocky coastlines to rolling hills and the steep slopes of the Hambleton and Cleveland Hills. Walking is the best way to experience the park. The 110-mile Cleveland Way from Helmsley to Filey lets you take in the full variety of mountain and coastal scenery. Alternatively, hop on a steam train operated by the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and enjoy the scenery without breaking a sweat. As the train travels through the 18-mile picturesque stretch between Pickering and Grosmont, keep an eye out for Goathland Station—the very same station used as Hogsmeade in the Harry Potter films.

Visitors can pick up a tabloid-sized Moors & Coast guide (50 pence) from newsagents. It includes maps and information and is the most affordable park travel guide available.
